Angelline chuckled. How is it he can wash away the ugly feelings inside me...with only a few words? she thought. It would remain a mystery for her for some time. As he lay his head on her lap she only smiled. "No, I don't mind. And I can say the same from my view." Looking down at him her eyes brightened for a few seconds before they were lost in a tidal wave of memories.
Looking away for a little bit she returned her attention back to his face not wanting to look away. Taking comfort in his open eyes she started her story.
"As you know I used to live Paris. What you might not know is that my mother and father, as well as my brother, are artistic geniuses. My father is a professional musician and composer. My mother is an artist whose works sell for thousands of dollars, and my brother is a writer whose sold quite a few books." Taking a pause for breath she continued.
"They were famous in Europe and we were one of the wealthiest families because of all of the combined works of my mother and father...but when you're that renown and wealthy trouble is sure to follow. I was raised in a protected and loving environment. I didn't think that there was any evil in the world...I know that's stupid right," she said with a small laugh.
Closing her eyes so he wouldn't see the flash of pain her next memory brought she re-opened them. They were a bit glassy, but she continued with the story. "When I was ten I wandered away from our family estate and wound up on the sidestreets of Paris. I was looking around trying to find my way back home when this man came up and grabbed me. He knocked me out with a cloth soaked in chloroform and stuffed me in a sack. I woke up later to find myself blindfolded and tied to a chair. I was so scared Ace. I didn't know what I had done wrong, who this man was, where my family was, and what was happening. I was just a naive ten year old girl who wanted to go home."
"I started to cry and since I wasn't gagged I called out for my brother. He was always the first person I turned to before my parents. He was always there for me...but not that time. I heard footsteps coming towards me and wondered if it was my brother. When the blindfold was taken off I saw the unfamiliar man in front of me with the most sadistic grin I’ve ever seen on a person. He didn’t explain anything all he did was punch me in the face. I cried out in pain and he only punched me again, this time in the gut….everytime I cried out he would punch me again until I passed out.”
“The next day was worse. When I woke up I was tied to a bed, there was a window above it and I could see the stars shining. I wished on them asking for help. Wanting to get out of there…but of course my wish didn’t come true. The man, who I later found out was a wanted criminal John Pierre, came back and continued beating me just like the day before only this time he started to insult me. He would constantly say that no one loved me. I was all alone in this world. No one would come to rescue me. I was an unwanted child. I should just die.”
Angelline stopped at that point to compose her voice which had started to crack. Once she was under control she continued with the story, still a bit shaky.
“That continued for two weeks. It would vary though. One day he might abuse me physically, the next emotionally, or he might do both at the same time. Once he even used a hot iron and burned my back, and the next day he whipped me. I still have the scars on my back. I pleaded with the man to stop hurting me. I asked what I had did wrong, but he never answered, just continued with the abuse,” she whispered, “anyways by the time I got rescued no one could recognize me. I was bruised and covered in blood. It took me a while to realize who had saved me. All I knew was when I was touched by a rescuer I screamed pleading with him not to hurt me….it took four years for the mental trauma to be erased. A few months for the scars and broken bones to heal fully…” A tear escaped from the corner of her eye and she closed them, trapping the rest behind her eyelids.
“So that’s my story Ace…I’m sorry you had to hear it,” she said with a small smile and laugh. “I’m really sorry.”

Ace’s eyes had been closed, and filled with tears as he said her story. As she finished, he looked up at Angel. Ace looked at his angel with more respect that he could ever express. He looked in her golden eyes and said , “Angel, never in my life have I met a girl like you”, He said, breaking up, “When I first saw you, I felt this feeling that was just…right”.
He stopped for a moment, letting the words take their effect, “My respect for you has gone up by a percentage you might not ever come to imagine,” He dazed in her eyes, as he had countless times but this time, it was different, and saw the hurt and pain that was scarred in her history that she told him. “Its not a silly tragedy. I must say, I understand your feelings deeply and I am happy you told me.”
Those golden eyes seemed to look different. They seemed to look as if they opened up inside, as if the mask had been unveiled. He was dazzled by her beauty and her persistence to life. Over and over he thought to himself, How could someone mistreat such a precious thing as Angel? . Ace was longing for this moment, the moment he finally got “his angel”. He had to continue, he had to help her recover.
Sitting up, he got ever the closer, and whispered, with all the faith in the world, “I love you even more, mi amour” He was sure he had nailed the accent down perfectly. He had been trying all day, and he was sure this time, he had it just right. He landed a kiss upon her forehead, then her lips. Looking into her eyes with his tear-ridden eyes, he said, “I will be your angel for as long as you live, and trust me, I‘m not after your money, don’t ever think that.” He knew that if he ever left her, or not be able to help, she would relive the same tragedy over. And he couldn’t ever allow himself to become such a heartless person.
“As for your back, I’m sure it’s as beautiful as you are,” Adding emphasis to his words, he leaned back a bit, and looked at her back, “I know I can’t wait to see it.” He joked around, knowing that she would have wanted him to. “Anyways, make yourself comfortable. You still have to hear the story of Alexander McCloud, if you didn’t forget.”

Angelline was surprised to see his eyes overflowing with tears. She was deeply moved to see him react so strongly to her story. It made her realize how deeply he did love her more than any words could and that sentiment brought a smile to her face. She had thought that the event wouldn’t effect her as much, but she had been wrong. Only by re-telling it and having someone accept her after the telling made her realize just how deeply it was ingrained into her.
A few tears fell, but they weren’t tears of pain or sadness. They were tears of joy. Joy at finally being able to let her past go with a light heart. Thank you Ace. I can now forgive that man for what he did to me. “I’m glad…that you can respect me and love me with my flaws. And thank you for listening and not just hearing. It makes me truly realize how deep you care for me…and likewise how much I care for you.” As he gazed into her eyes she gazed back and got lost in their warm brown depths.
“But don’t worry about me. Because of your words I’ve realized why it effected me so much. I kept it bottled up inside making the poison run ever deeper. By someone listening to my story and accepting me you’ve taken away the poison. And I couldn’t forgive the man who did that to me…but now I can. Sure most people will say hate the man, but I’ve just realized that because I hated that man I couldn’t let the event go. That’s what kept it locked up for so long. My hatred and anger,” she mused out loud.
“I love you even more, mi amour” At those words Angelline let out a laugh of joy and hugged him hard. As she listened to his touching words she cried a little and sighed in contentment. “You said that excellently mi amour. And don’t worry I know you won’t escape. I’m going to chain you to my side,” she joked as she pulled back a bit to look at his face. Upon hearing his crack about her back she rolled her eyes and laughed. “That’s not going to happen. Get used to that fact Ace. Now let’s move onto your story,” she whispered. This time she was the one to lie down on the bench and she only grinned at him. “You’ve had this position for too long. Now it’s my turn to relax.”

Ace didn’t reply to any of those, but just let her express her feelings as she wished. There was only one comment he did comment back on, “Aww come on, you can’t be serious. What if I take you to the beach? I know I’m gonna see it then,” Ace lowered his head down towards her, as she was laying down on his lap now, “ Because as I said before, it’s just as pretty as you are.”
“Anyways, on with the story, shall we?” He said, raising his hands in the air, as if impersonating a school teacher of some sort. How to start, he asked himself, how to start? “Okay well, a few days after I was born, my mom’s husband, my father, he was never my dad, left her, not wanting to pay to help support me, which left my mom to take care of me all by myself.”
Ace sighed a bit before continuing, “You’re beautiful, you know that?” He said, looking down at her, “Anyways, growing up without seeing my mom most of the time as she had always had this job of washing dishes at this trash diner she worked at, I felt like an orphan, as I left home most of the time, unattended. Yeah, that’s kinda scary, a baby left home all alone. But I survived, thankfully.”
Ace looked up and noticed it was getting dark, he needed to hurry the story up, “When I turned 6, I became a paperboy. However without a bike, that job was sort of difficult, as I had to wake up 3 hours early just so I could complete my job in time. Over the years, it just became a habit. I still remember how much I got paid…It was….um, $4.95 a week. Not much, but still my mom needed the money, and I can say I helped a bit.”
“My mom then became pregnant again, with my little sister, you see, so I had to work overtime, with which I made 20.96 every two weeks. Better than before, but it also required more running around. One of my friends loaned me their bike, so the job sort of got easier. Every morning, I’d give my mom a kiss, and rush out of the house, as excited as ever.” Ace paused, and looked to see if Angel was paying attention.
“My sister was born pre-maturely, 3 months before her due date, which raised the hospital bills. That time, I had to work over extra time, just so we could have a shot at saving her life. Safe to say, I succeeded.” He let a tear drop, “ Then my mom got a job at a small law firm, and worked her way up, until one day she finally owned it. Then she expanded it. How do you say, we lived happily ever after?”
“However, one morning after school, I came home, and in the kitchen, the dead bodies on my sister and mom lay there. The shock was with me for 2 years, before I finally decided to move here. Too many memories in New York, you see. Then, well, my mom left me enough money to live the rest of my life in ease, as well as my grandchildren. And then….I met you”
Ace smiled, faintly, as if to show that things had happened for the best.

Angelline shook her head at his comment. "Not if I wear a rashgaurd you won't see it. And I usually do wear those when I go to the beach so there," she said sticking her tongue out at him like a little child.
As she lay there she listened to his story and found herself covering her mouth in horror and sympathy in some parts of his story. After hearing about his sister and his mom she let out a small sob. She couldn't imagine the pain he must've felt. True she had gone through two weeks of hell, but he had it so much worse. His family had been taken away from him after they had all fought so hard to be together. Angelline was incredibly lucky to have her family. She hadn't realized how lucky until she heard the story.
Seeing him smile at the end of the tale broke her heart. With tears overflowing in her eyes she sat up and hugged him. It was really the only thing she knew how to do. Angelline remembered how her mom always hugged her when she was at her lowest and she had always felt better. Safe in the arms of one you love, the world and its problems seem to dissapear.
"I honestly can't say things are okay Ace. Because it's not. What I can say is that you'll have someone who loves you till the end. Your mom is still with you in spirit as well as your sister. I bet you they're real angels and they're watching over you right now," she whispered in his ear.
The words...they won't come...they get stuck in my throat and I can't get them out...what's wrong with me? she thought in desperation. "You said you've never met a girl like me before. Honestly I've never met a guy like you and I can bet you I'll never find one like you. Your trials have made you strong beyond measure and you've shown maturity and compassion not even my parents and brother were able to give me. Ask me to do anything and I will do it for you. It'll always be for you."

“We’ll see about that, now wont we?” Ace said, returning the favor as he stuck his tongue out as well. He loved pushing her buttons, as he was then.
Ace hugged her back, and the only thing he could muster was, “My mom always used to say ‘safe in the arms of one you love, the world and its problems seem to disappear’, and I have a feeling she’s right.” Ace didn’t want to let go, he felt content with her being in his arms forever. There was no other joy in the world like this, he thought to himself as he looked up. It was nighttime, and he was sure Angel would be getting a call from her mom soon.
“They are real angels. As are you, Angelline Devorez, simply because you have listened to what no one else deemed important, the words of a 16 year old boy.” Ace struggled, on the verge of tears, it was hard to speak. “Why in the world is it that when I’m with you, I cry?” He paused, to add a dramatic effect, “I have to say, I love it.” There he goes again, poking her buttons.
“Anything?” Ace said, looking at her, eyebrow raised, “Well, how about letting me see you back?” He tried his hardest to keep his laughter in, but it was to no avail. He laughed out loud, awaking the birds in the nearby trees. It took him a while to quiet down, and when he did, he looked at her seriously. “I want to meet your parents.”

Angelline couldn't help but laugh at his words they were a mirror of what she had been thinking earlier. "I'm sorry I'm not laughing at you. It's just that I was thinking that a few seconds ago. What your mom used to say that is." She didn't respond much to his other comments. She just sat there letting it soak in as the warmth sunk into her heart and spread like a drug through her system. Angelline was becoming a bit lethargic from her overwhelming feelings and the whispering of the night's music.
Just as she thought she might fall asleep she snapped awake at his last comments. "You're never going to give that a break will you? Tell you what maybe if you catch me training then you'll get to see. Other than that no." She was a bit stunned at how fast he went from serious to joking, in some aspects it scared her. "You can meet my parents later...first I have to break it to Damien...he's a bit...actually very overprotective. He might beat you to a pulp before he lets you near the house," she said with a nervous laugh.

“Oh….Ok,” Noticing as how she didn’t respond to his other comments, Ace decided not to talk either, not willing to disturb the beautiful silence that fell over them. The leaves rustling against each other, playing some childish game, the crickets, singing songs of love, and other such things could be heard if one would put his heart to it, just what Ace was doing at the moment. Looking up, he saw that there was only one star in the sky, and that it was directly over them. Ace knew exactly who it was ,“Mom..,” Ace whimpered, his bottom lip quivering. Hoping that Angel didn’t hear nor see anything, he lowered his head, and looked at the ground. His legs were asleep for sitting down so long, but he didn’t mind, it was all part of a pleasant evening.
“Damien is your brother, eh?” Ace asked, rubbing his chin to add a dramatic effect, “Guess I’ll have to take him out the picture then, right?” Ace pushed. He scooted over closer to Angel and whispered, “ I want to learn how to ride horses. Teach me?” He was being serious that time. It had always been a fantasy of his to be able to ride horses. And throw newspapers at the same time.

Angelline was content to listen to the music of the night for the rest of the night here in his arms. However a small whisper broke the silence and made her tear up slightly. "Mom." Looking up at the sky she saw a single star exactly up above them and she smiled. Don't worry. I'll take good care of him...even if it means whacking some sense into him now and again. she thought. Angelline could've sworn she heard a voice whisper into her ear, but she shrugged it off not sure if her ears were playing tricks on her or not.
Hearing Ace say that about her brother made her eyes widen and she glared at him. "You better be joking." Seeing that he was she sighed but her eyes widened once more when he said he wanted her to teach him how to ride a horse. She had never taught anyone how to ride. Only her brother and dad did that. Panicking slightly her eyes darted around looking for a means to escape. "Um...um...hey look is that my brother?" she asked pointing in one direction as she jumped off the bench and started to sprint away.

“I am, I am. Don’t hurt me,” Ace said, raising his hands, as to show that he was scared. He noticed that she started to panic, and then she did what he thought was impossible: Run away. “Oh great, way to spoil a mood, Angel!,” he screamed after her. Making up his mind in less than a split second, he ran after her. He was stronger, faster, and could catch up in a heartbeat, but he played along, making sure to keep her in his sights. He didn’t want anything to happen to her, so he stayed close behind, just like a guardian angel.

Angelline turned around and laughed seeing him follwing her. "We needed a bit of stretching this is a perfect way to get some exer-" At that exact moment she slammed into a tree. Since she had been facing Ace she wasn't able to see the tree right in her path. "Ow," she mumbled as she fell to the ground. Rubbing her head she sighed a bit before laughing hard. "I'm always so clumsy. One of these days I'll end up in the hospital," she said making a joke of her embarresing situation.

“Ouch,” Ace thought to himself as he saw Angel run into the tree, body first. He sped up, hoping that she was alright, and when he got there, she joked. “You idiot! What if something happened to you?! Do you want what happened before happening again?!” Ace yelled, he didn’t want to, but it was necessary due to the situation they were in. What if something did happen to her? All fingers would have been pointed at him, and he would have no answers. He could imagine himself stuttering as they asked him what happened to her, what did he do to her, and the such.
Slapping his forehead, he started to speak again, “ I’m sorry, Angel. It’s just that I care about you, and I didn’t want anything happening to you.” Ace noticed she was still laying down, and walked over to her feet. Getting down on his hands and knees, he crawled over her, finally reaching her face, and gave her a kiss.

Taken aback at his tone of voice Angelline lowered her face in shame. "I'm sorry. I'll try to be more careful next time," she whispered. What he said was true, but at the same time she couldn't help but wonder if he wasn't taking things a bit to far. Good thing he doesn't know how many scratches and bruises I get from training the horses, she thought with a slight wince. If he knew that he'd probably fly off the handle.
At his apology she nodded her head. "It's okay. I'm glad you worry...wait no I mean..Argh this just doesn't seem to be coming out right," she said with a huff of irritation at her own lack of words. She saw him crawling towards her and was about to ask what he was doing when he kissed her. Pulling back from the kiss she shook her head at him. "You really do confuse me you know that?" she asked before giving him a slight peck on the lips.

“Don’t worry yourself, I just have a tendency to worry a lot sometimes,” Ace said winking. Still on top of her, “I have a tendency to confuse you too, I see.” Giving her a peck on the lips again. Just then, to ruin the perfect mood, ace heard a ringing. A cell phone ringing, to be exact. Ace pouted, “That’s your mom.” Ace rolled off of her, and laid down right beside her, “you might wanna get that.” He said, pointing to her cell phone.

Angelline laughed at him. "Aww don't act like that. You remind me of a little boy who was just deprived of his dessert," she teased. They had such an odd push and pull relationship, but then again she wouldn't have it any other way. Reaching into her jeans pocket she dug out her cell phone and answered it. "Hello? Hey mom....no I'm coming home right now...yes mom don't worry....I love you too. Bye," she said as she hung up the phone.
"Well looks like I have to go again. I'll see you later." Getting up she looked back and offered him her hand. "But first need a hand up?"
