Ace jumped out of his seat as Angel stood. His Angel, as he said countless times before. He knew she must have been reminded of something very painful. Or someone. Ace flinched at that thought, and decided it was best to confront her. Just as he was about to confront her, she spoke, “Ace I just realized I don’t like you saying that. Who was I kidding. We hardly know each other, we can’t say we like each other, I mean who knows. Maybe all we feel is a superficial attraction that will break under the slightest touch. The scene at the cafeteria proved my point.” She said that in a monotone, which made it even more serious. He noticed her eyes had turned cold, leaving the sweet golden eyes that were just there a moment again in some sort of mental prison. Ace gritted his teeth, he didn’t want to see her upset.
He walked over in front of her, just as a slight breeze blew, blowing her hair in front of her face. Ace knew she was about to tuck it behind her ears, as she had done before, but he grabbed her hand as just as she was about to. “No. It looks better this way,’ He said, cracking up, “We may be young, and we may hardly know each other, but there is one thing I can tell you, Angel. That’s that I’ve never met anyone like you before in my life. Sure, I’ve had my fair share of girlfriends, but compared to you, they’re nothing but mere memories left in my mind. And I don’t know what’s troubling you, but I can tell you this, and if you want to take me up on it, go ahead.” Changing into a deeper tone, but still cracking up, Ace continued, “ Superficial or not, just know that I love you, and without you, I don’t know how I’d live. And if it’s a matter of not knowing each other enough, then trust me, we have time for that. We’re still young, and that’s the truth.” Ace couldn’t hold it in anymore as the tears flooded past his eyes, breaking past the barrier than had long since contained them, and hugged Angel, not wanting to let go for anything in the world.

Angelline swam in memories of those two torturous weeks. She started to shake and she didn’t even see Ace gritting his teeth. As the breeze blew her hair into her face she was about to move it as she always did when she was stopped by Ace. Glaring at him she was about to yell at him to let her go, but he started to talk. As always she was floored by his words, and they slapped her out of her icy barrier.
“ Superficial or not, just know that I love you, and without you, I don’t know how I’d live. And if it’s a matter of not knowing each other enough, then trust me, we have time for that. We’re still young, and that’s the truth.” Those words hit her, the most, but that layer of doubt and self-loathing still stood in her way of fully accepting them as truth. Shaking harder she didn’t realize she was crying until he hugged her and she felt his tears mingle with hers. Closing her eyes she buried her face in his shoulder. Right now all Angelline wanted was safety, closure. Knowing that there would be someone who didn’t try to protect her from all the nasty things there were in life, but they’d be there for her to turn to. Ask her questions and get plain, blunt answers from.
“Ace,” she whispered. “Thank you.” Her voice was muffled as she had her face buried in his shoulder, but hopefully he heard her. “I’m sorry. There are deep wounds I harbor. I may try to hide them but they’re there. Know that if you take me you’re taking days of pain, and hardships. It's going to be far from easy."

you’re taking days of pain…It’s going to be far from easy. The words ringed in his mind, but he didn’t care. He had made up his mind the moment he talked to her for the first time. He said he was always going to be there for her, and he didn’t plan on stopping now. “Angelline Devorez, I could care less about what pain in inflicted onto me, as long as you are safe. And know that I would not leave your side, not even if I died.” Ace was sure his words could not be doubted, as he used a tone that showed that he was seriously and one that tried to cheer her up as well. The words were carefully chosen, floating around in Ace’s mind before he let them out, making sure to keep Angel from suffering from a nervous breakdown, which she looked like she was close to if he hadn’t had helped her. He waited on her response.

Angelline relaxed as his words acted as a soothing balm. The barrier of ice around her persona shattered into tiny fragments and as soon as it shattered obvious changes came over her. She stopped shaking and the tears that had been leaking from her eyes stopped. A few leaked out now and then, but not a whole flood like before. “I’ll be here for you as well Ace. I may not be able to offer you words of advice, I may not even be able to erase all your problems, but know that I’ll be here. Waiting for you with a smile and a hug,” she whispered.
A gust of wind blew making her shiver slightly. She hadn’t worn a jacket to the Park thinking it wouldn’t be as chilly as the other night. How wrong she was. Lifting her arms up she hugged Ace back and chuckled. “You’re very warm Ace. It’s nice.” It was such an odd comment, but it was what she felt like saying at that moment to break the tense atmosphere.
The shadows that haunted Angelline receded into her body settling in the deep dark box in the corners of her mind. It would fuel her dream character Alexis, her nightmares would be there waiting to claim her when she slept, but for now in the waking world she was safe…she was loved.

Ace felt her relaxing as the tears that rapidly flooded out of her eyes, slowed down. A occasional one here, and there, but who could blame her? She was going through a rough time, and all Ace could offer at that moment was quite literally, a shoulder to cry on. A wet should to cry on, considering that due to all her tears, it was flooded and Ace could feel the water seeking in, giving him goosebumps for a short while. “ Stick with what you just said, and we got a deal,” Ace said, with a wink, looking into her golden eyes.
“Well, maybe it’s because of the fact that your body temperature is normal, and that would mean your tears are quite warm, and because of you crying, you made my shoulder wet with your warm tears, which in turn, made my shoulder warm?….Okay I’ll be quiet now,” Ace said, as he hugged Angel back, with a wide smile on his face. “Since you‘re such a hot girl, can I have your phone number?,” He whispered into her ear, he figured she needed humor, and what better way was that then to push her buttons, as he had always done before. Could life get any better? Ace thought as he savored the moment.

Angelline rolled her eyes again. The mood was back to being light and frivolous. She liked it like this. Sometimes when one was to serious they would loose sight of the truly important moments in life. Emotions would get mixed up, and you’d lose your way. When you relaxed and let nature run it’s course was truly when you could experience some of life’s greater moments. But before it got too frivolous she wanted to say something. “For pain you need kindness…and for dark you need light. Both are important, you cannot single one for the other. I think that’s what everyone’s situation is Ace,” she whispered lifting her head and smiling at him. “Two people balance each other out to provide for one another. Today I provide the pain and dark. You provide the kindness and light, but who knows maybe tomorrow it’ll be the opposite.” Reaching out she laid one hand on his cheek as her smile softened. Yes, who knows what tomorrow will be bring. For if there’s one thing I learned. It’s that the only sure thing about the future, is uncertainty.
Blinking her eyes to snap out of her reverie she laughed as she listened to him ramble on about her earlier comment. “Yes, give me a break from your rambling for once,” she laughed. It was funny to hear him ramble on and on about something. It was quite endearing. “And how do you suppose I should give you my number hmm? I don’t exactly have a pen and paper.” He was very good at that. Pushing her buttons, but she knew he meant well by it so she took it all in stride. Besides I can just push right back.

Ace grinned, “I didn’t really ask for a lecture, but that was very nice, Angel.” He was only saying that to mess with her again, push her buttons as they say. He waited a while before he continued, “I don’t know about you, Angel, but I’m always going to be your angel in your time of need. Unless, of course you want me to be your bad boy,” Ace said, finished it off with a wink. Ace grabbed the hand she had placed on his cheek, and kissed it, “I love you,” He whispered, “but do you love me? Even if it is just a little bit?” He wanted her to answer as if her life depended on it, but he wanted a truthful answer. This really mattered to him, and if she just played it off, he didn’t know what he would do. Break down, he supposed. He had to force the thoughts to the back of his head, as he looked into Angel’s kind eyes, the ones he had come to love, only to doze off again. He loved that feeling, and hopefully, she did too.
“How about you just carve your number into my arm with that stick over there?,” Ace said, pointing towards a fallen branch laying not far from them. “Or about you use that heavenly voice of yours and say it out loud? You know I’ll never forget it,” Ace said, as he gave her a small kiss on the cheek. He hadn’t wanted to kiss her on the lips until she kissed him first, due to the mood she was in, and him kissing her would likely set off another problem, which he did not want at all.

Angelline frowned and let out a huff or irritation as he seemingly brushed off her words. “Thanks Ace. Real smooth,” she said, but ruined it when she laughed a bit. “I don’t need an angel, or a bad boy. I just need a simple person who can be there. And you know I love you, but I need a lot more time to love you as much as I can. I need to know more about you first. I’m not one to rush much into a situation…well except maybe this one.” She hoped he wouldn’t be hurt by her words. A bit nervous now she turned her head to the side to look around the Park. It was such an idyllic setting, she couldn’t help but relax.
Sighing once more she turned back to face him and smiled impishly when she heard his comment. Standing up she walked over and picked up the fallen branch he had pointed at. Walking back over she held out her free hand and beckoned him to come closer. “I like option one better. It seems much more entertaining…maybe not for you but it’ll sure be entertaining for me,” she said with a mischievous gleam in her eyes. She wouldn’t really hurt him, but this was so much better than moping around. Angelline hated to share her problems with others, it made her feel like a burden. And she was getting a bit uncomfortable from his kisses. I’ve never been in a situation like this…best keep it simple.

“You know me, I try my best. And I’m far from simple, my dear lady,” Ace said, as he looked into her eyes. He smiled, just barely, as if to show her that he was listening, and he did care. He figured that if she thought that he wasn’t, she would leave him and he would be alone. Without Angel. Yes of course, His Angel. He looked down and started to think about twenty four hours ago. He had every detail down to how many acorns a squirrel was holding. Ace smiled at the thought, only to frown at her next comment.
Ace sighed, and got up. Walking over to Angel, he said but one thing, “I want the area code too,” As he knelt down, and bared his forearm for her to see. He knew she wasn’t going to do it, but she deserved a joke. She was doing one now, or so he thought. He pretended to start crying, and said, “You know, if you do this, I’m never going to call you.” he loved pushing her buttons. Push, push, and push was all he loved to do with Angel. Hopefully he wouldn’t push too hard one day.

Angelline sighed and used the branch to lean on for support as she listened to him talk. She thought back to just last night when they had first met. She found it highly ironic how they had talked about fate and destiny in their meeting when now they were talking about their future. God must love screwing with my life.
As if God had heard that comment the branch she was leaning on snapped causing her to topple face forward into the ground. Mumbling curses in French under her breath she sat on the ground rubbing the dirt off her face. Glaring back at the branch she realized how odd this must look and started to laugh. Seeing Ace kneeling next to her with a bared forearm she shook her head in mock regret. “Unfortunately God seems to not want me to inflict harm on you. Look he even broke the branch for you.” Instead she leaned over and kissed his forearm and smiled. It was a bit cheesy, but it was the only thing she could think of doing at that time.“I think I’ll use option two instead now.”

Ace felt the conversation was dying, or worse, Angel was losing interest him. What if they were only superficial feelings? What if they no longer exist in Angel’s heart? What if no feelings for me exist in her heart anymore?Ace almost broke down during his heated debate between himself, but decided to go over to angel.
Ace wished he could smile at Angel’s comment, but instead did and said nothing. He had to do something, and fast. It was like winning her over again, and if it meant eating dirt, literally, he would do it. Standing up, he looked down at Angel, as he was about a foot taller, and noticed a bit of dirt on her forehead. “You missed a spot,” He said, letting the words sink in so she knew what he was talking about, “I’ll get it,” Lowering his head, he suck in the dirt. He smiled, as if he made a victory, and a big one at that. A split second later, he spat it out. “Ew, that was disgusting!,” He exclaimed, talking like a five year old.

Angelline tensed when he didn't reply to her comment. A bubble of worry and dread welled up in her throat causing her to feel a little light headed. What's wrong? Was it something I said? she thought to herself.
She gasped at his words sensing a deeper meaning to them. Before she could react she felt his lips on her forehead as he sucked the dirt from it. Blushing furiously she looked up at his face and saw a victorious smile before he spat out the dirt. “Ew, that was disgusting!,” Laughing at the comment she stood and leaned against him. "Silly you didn't have to do that!" Reaching for one of his hands she entwined hers in it and brought it to her lips where she bestowed a tender kiss on it. "But thank you. It's the thought that counts," she said truly touched by his words and actions. Hopefully he could tell. Angelline wasn't very good at relationships. Heck she hadn't even been in one until now so her knowledge on how to do things like this was incredibly limited.

Ace still had the taste of dirt in his mouth. He wondered what was in dirt that made it linger around so often, but was soon taken away from his thoughts as he felt Angel lean up against him. She took his hand and kissed it. He didn’t smile. Shifting his weight to his right leg, he sighed, “Now you’ve got my jealous of my hand,” He said, leaning in closer to her, turning his words into a mere whisper, “You’ve got to stop doing that.” Looking into her eyes, he noticed something that he missed before. They were tireless, as if they really did hold some sort of burden. A terrible one at that, but he was afraid to question her, afraid to find out the truth about Angelline Devorez. Still leaning towards her, he added, “Can I ever find about the real Angelline Devorez, my angel?” He meant those words, and he wouldn’t let her forget them until he himself found out the truth.

Angelline stiffened for a second before she sighed letting her body relax. Letting go of his hand she let a tired smile show, but she thought it would be good to tell him. Secrets breed hostility and mistrust...I guess it's time to tell him. she thought. "Yes, I can't keep any secrets from you. I'll tell you. You'll probably think I'm stupid for having it effect me so deeply though. Even I think it's stupid to let it affect me this much," she said rambling a bit.
Walking over to the bench she sat and motioned to the seat next to her. "It's best if you're comfortable it's a bit of a story." Only her family knew the full story of her kidnapping and the two weeks she had spent being tortured by that horrible man. "I hope you can be patient as I tell my story." Her voice trembled a bit as she opened the lid on her memories letting them flood out and course through her like poison. No...not poison any longer. No more.

“No, Angel. It is not stupid if it can bother as much as it is right now. Nothing is ever stupid unless you keep it in, and experience the pain.” Getting even closer, he added, “ I love you, Angel. You can tell me anything.” But just then, she walked back towards then bench. He smiled, as he sat down and motioned for him to sit down next to her. Walking over, he told her, “I’ll lay my head on your lap, if that’s fine.” He said as he laid down on the bench, resting his head on her lap. She had told him to get comfortable, and this was the perfect way. “Please continue,” He said, looking at her, trying to catch a glimpse of her eyes, “Might I mention the view is wonderful?”
