Angelline looked up as the last remnants of the sudden afternoon shower stopped. The dark gray clouds were slowly rolling away letting the sun peak through to shine it's rays down on the Earth to dry the drenched greenery. Smiling she looked around at the blades of grass shining from their recent bath. Turning her head back towards the stables she saw Shadow pacing anxiously in his stall. The magnificent stallion wasn't one to stand in one place for very long, but because of the shower Angelline had to keep him in. Now that the rain was gone however she could let him out for his daily afternoon ride.
Jogging over to the stall she carefully opened the gate and moved to the side as the antsy stallion leapt out of his prison and out the door. Shaking her head Angelline moved over to the racks on the side of the stable to take out a saddle. As she made her way out of the stable she called Shadow back to her and securely fastened the saddle to his back. Stepping into the stirrups she swung herself over easily. A huge grin split her face as she took a hold of the reins. Leaning close to his ear she whispered encouraging words as she kneed him in the sides and off they went.
Angelline leaned close to his mane as they picked up speed. It had always been a great pleasure to her as they raced along the even ground the wind rushing over her, adrenaline pumping through her veins. Letting out a wild laugh she spun him over to the show course where small bushes were lined up. Spurring Shadow on further the two easily lept over the bushes and went back to galloping over the free range course. Life doesn't get better than this, she thought.

It was the sound of a woman's laugh that had woken Ken from his dazed walk. Thoughts of school and homework had distracted him from his own life, and he had wandered into a wide open area. The sound of galloping was heard easily, and it made Ken smile as running was what he did best. Judging by the number of gallops per second, Ken figured it was an experienced rider riding a very strong Stallion. Ken walked just a little further, and he could see the source of his excitment. A beautiful... very beautiful girl riding an equally beautiful horse. The thought alone made him smile. He elected not to say anything, as to not startle or interrupt the horse's joyful afternoon stroll...

Pulling lightly on the reins Angelline made small calming noises for Shadow. He had a slight sheen of sweat on his beautiful black coat and she thought he needed a break. Swinging her right leg out of the stirrup she jumped lightly to the ground. Years of practice had made her agile enough to accomplish that feat, but remembering her first time trying that made her laugh. Ah yes. I landed on my face instead of my feet. Damien wouldn't be quiet after that. she thought with a roll of her eyes.
Taking the reins she started to lead Shadow to the small Lake on the property when she noticed an unfamiliar boy on the field. "Hey! Who are you?!" she asked, a curious gleam in her eyes. Letting go of Shadow's reins she ran over to the boy wanting to know who he was and why he was there on a school day. Most people didn't come over until the weekends to ride the horses.

The girl seemed confused. She asked who he was with such firmness that Ken was a little shocked. "Who am I? I don't think my name is worthy enough to be spoken in front of a beauty like yourself," Ken said, "But since you asked, it is my duty to respond. Kenneth Maxwell. But if you so choose, you can call me Ken." Ken smiled. He walked a little closer. "And what may I call you, and your horse as well?" Ken asked, interested.

Angelline shifted uncomfortably at his words. She knew he meant well by his comments, but it still didn't erase the uneasiness. "Well Ken I don't need flattery but my name's Angelline. And if you come any closer I'll have Shadow run you over," she said with a sweet smile. To prove her point she whistled and the stallion raced over to stand next to her. "If you want to talk just say it in plain words without flattery. I have come to find that those who use flattery on others only have ill intentions in the end," she said. If Ken didn't like her words too bad. It was the truth as far as she could see and it irked her that people couldn't stomach the truth, but they could take the lies.
"So what brings you to my home Ken? Do you want to ride one of the horses?" she asked nodding her head in the direction of the stables.

Ken smiled. At least she was honest. "I apologize. My mom always told me to be as polite as possible in front of people you want to make good impressions with. I just tried my best." Ken tilted his head to the side slightly as he said this. But the girl had a point, he was trying to flatter her. It was obviously not subtle enough. "Well," Ken said, in response, "I kinda just wondered here. I should be at school now... but it doesn't really matter, not to me... not much. Shadow eh? Beautiful horse," Ken said, and stuck his hand out and walked forward to pet it. He hoped he wouldn't turn into the next Christopher Reeves.

Angelline returned the smile and nodded her head relaxing a bit. It was better to give a person the benefiet of the doubt and Ken seemed nice enough but the last part of his statement confused her a bit. "Tried your best at making a first impression? It's okay, I judge on long term, not first impressions. After all they're deceiving most times," she whispered the last part to herself not wanting him to hear. Hearing his other comments though made her laugh.
"Well you wandered into the right place. If you want I can saddle up a horse and you can try your hand at riding. And yes he is a beautiful horse." Angelline loved Shadow to death, but he could get kind of tempermental. "Watch out. Don't pet anywhere near his head," she warned seeing the ears of her stallion flick back to touch his head, baring his teeth a bit.

Angelline's warning made Ken stop in his tracks. "I like my hand... I think I'll avoid his head... until he likes me better." Ken smiled. "However, if it isn't too much trouble, could you saddle me up a horse? I think it's just what I need. It could give us a chance to get to know eachother, without words, ya know?" Ken chuckled.

Nodding her head Angelline moved back to Shadow's side and swung herself up into the saddle. "Wait here please. I'll go bring you a horse." Nudging him in the side the two sprang off towards the stable and within ten minutes they were back, a beige Andalusian stallion saddled and ready to go. "Here you go. This is Shiro, a bit gentler in nature compared to some of the other stallions. I thought you might like a challenge so I brought him instead of one of our mares...that is unless you want to ride one of them," she said tossing Ken the reins.

"Shiro, huh?" Ken said, and smiled. He liked that name, a name of one of his cats when he was little. "No, I'll take him," Ken said, clutching the reins. "Now, I'm not as ridiculously skilled as you," Ken said, hoisting himself up on his horse awkwardly, "but that doesn't mean you can laugh at me." Ken said, laughing softly. Shiro had a soft coat, so Ken could tell that he was well maintained. Less intimidating the Shadow was, though, but that made Ken feel much safer. "Where to? You lead, its your land."

Angelline watched Ken get into the saddle with narrowed eyes hoping that he wouldn't fall. She let out a sigh of relief as he managed to get in and beamed at him. "Well you got into the saddle just fine so that constitutes you as good in my book for now." Pointing to the small Lake near a small copse of trees she turned to look back at him. "We're going there. Shadow needs a small break and it'll be a nice place to relax so come on." Leaning over she nudged Shadow in the side and off they went. Turning back to look at him she laughed. "If you can keep up with me I'll say you move from good to advance in my books," she taunted as the adrenaline rush kicked into effect.

If he could keep up, who does she think she is. Ken knew he could keep up with Angelline with ease. But one thought plagued him. Do I show off and beat her... or do I lose horribly and hope she finds it cute.... Cute was never something Kenneth Maxwell liked to rely on, so he decided to make it as close as possible. Lightly kicking Shiro's sides, Ken trotted slowly but close behind Angelline.

Angelline could hear the pounding of Shiro's hooves and grinned. Turning around again she shook her head lightly. "You know it's no fun if you hold back on a race," she said with a small smile. Turning back she nudged Shadow in the sides a bit harder and they picked up speed. The Lake was only a few yards away and she wondered if Ken would actually try to rise to the challenge and beat her. I do so love to race, she thought as a big grin split her face.

Ken could see that the lake was coming up fast, and the Angelline meant buisness. Kicking Shiro's sides much harder then before, they burst out into a full run. Ken was surprised how fast Shiro could go. "Holy sh.." Ken started, but knew not to curse in front of a lady unless ultimatley necessary. "I think I love this horse," Ken laughed, as his adreniline began to pump. The speed, the grace... it was exciting.

Angelline could hear them getting closer as well as his comments and smirked. "You may love Shiro, but you can't have him," she shouted back to him. She wondered if he even heard her with the roar of the wind from the speed they were going at. Leaning down further till it seemed she became a part of Shadow she kicked him in the sides as the stallion put on a last burst of speed. The Lake was now only a few feet away and the grin on her face widened. Almost there, she thought.
